Kramer Knives: A Real Cutting Edge, in VR 3D-180

VR Videos 360/180

Bob Kramer of Kramer Knives is one of America’s most celebrated bladesmiths, and is well known for making gorgeous and highly-coveted kitchen knives out of rare materials like meteorites. Kramer Knives 3D-180 is available to watch on Oculus headsets, and it’s easier than ever to queue it up in VR if you have an Oculus Quest or Oculus Go.

Click through, “Save to VR”, and put your headset on. It’s being delivered at 4K, and looks quite good as a streaming piece. What do you think? If you want to compare the streaming piece with a 5K sideloaded version, you can download it here and watch it in Oculus Gallery.

This video, which was shot in March of 2018, means a lot to me, as it was my first-ever “peak-quality”, 3D-180 shoot, and also, my first project recording and editing spatial audio (with Abesh Thakur’s help).

Michael Hawley and I flew to Bellingham, Washington, to visit Bob Kramer for a day of experimental capture. Bob was super generous with his time and spent 10 hours crafting a beautiful kitchen knife in his forge while we followed him with camera and audio recorders. We shot with the brand-new Z CAM K1 Pro for video and Zoom H2n + Sennheiser wireless lav mic for audio; I used the post-production process as an opportunity to learn, and to document the workflow.

After the shoot, Bob and Leanne hosted us at their house for a memorable evening of food, drinks, and conversation. Thank you for everything!
