Brushless gimbals, which are now commonplace for stabilizing video in the air, can also be used on the ground in interesting ways. Photographer Thomas O’Brien took me over Taylor Pass near Aspen, Colorado, today in his highly-modified Toyota Tacoma, and we had some fun by attaching a gimbal-stabilized GoPro to various areas of the car.

I used a GoPro HERO4 Black in a Feiyu Tech FY-WG 3-Axis Wearable Gimbal for GoPro attached to the windshield and various other glass surfaces in the vehicle using a standard GoPro Suction Cup Mount. The rig worked really well—not once did the violent movements of the car make the gimbal twitch or hiccup in any way! I was very impressed.

First, I tried mounting the gimbal with the battery base horizontal, but that configuration bounced around a lot. You can’t really see it in the footage, but it made me uncomfortable.

I finally ended up mounting the gimbal to the windshield vertically, which reduced the amount of whole-gimbal movement considerably.

Inside, we mounted it however we could to inside glass surfaces (the inside of the windshield, to side windows, and to the sliding rear truck cab window.
