has anyone tried the new Prilosec OTC?? supposedly their product works better than pepcid because it shuts down the stomach's acid pumps. if anyone's tried it, please post your results! thx
Prilosec theoretically would not work because the whole facial flushing is due to an allergic reaction to the aldehyde byproduct of alcohol metabolism. H2 blockers like zantac and pepcid work because they have antihistamine properties. Prilosec only blocks acid production and has no anti-allergenic effect so would not work.
I've tried pepcid, I think it worked, I felt that I could actually drink more taking pepcid. I only took 20mg, might take two 20 mg tablets........
Pepsid AC to the rescue! First time taking it tonight, before I used to get red after 2 sips of a hard drink... this time I finished an entire one and didn't feel nearly anything... no redness, no heart pounding, actually kindda sober... although stomach felt a bit unsettled because of all the food I ate before I took it. Anyone have experience with how much food to eat before taking the pill and drinking?
I typically turn bright red, my face, my limbs, the whole nine yards. My face would feel like its on fire, I have difficulty breathing, and my heart races. In some cases I get nauseous enough to puke after 1.5 drinks. I have to be very careful when I consume alcohol. However, just recently, I took Tagamet, and I had three drinks within 2 hours and only flushed to a light pink, and didn't feel the extreme effects of alcohol like I normally do. I probably could've gone for a fourth drink, but I didn't want to push my luck. Overall a good experience. I took this on a half empty stomach and drank about 30 min later. I wonder how long one pill will last.
Any information?

after i drink i have trouble falling asleeep. anyone else experience this??? oh and for me, i stick to beer cause hard alcohol just makes things a whole lot worse. i need to pace myself
i'm gonna try this pepcid ac thing! yeah i get the bright red face, heart pounding thing everytime i drink. i get around it by drinking for about 2 - 3hrs, then after that it goes away. the 1st hr is hte worst, i start to go bloaty red in my face, by the hr mark its usually bright red, my arms cheast also, heart racing away. by about 2hrs or 3hrs time it eventually calms down and i can keep on drinking and i look normal. so i usually drink 1st then head out into town later. i stick to one type of drink, mixing it seems to bring the redness back up, and i dont eat while drinking as this seems to make me red again. i thought of a cure but its very extreme! if the emyemze is missing from our liver or kidneys then i guess a transplant would solve the problem ...lol
i can only get tagamet which seems to reduce the flushing to a tolerable shade
anyway does anyone know of or has experience any damaging side affects? like will taking these tablets eat out our stomachs or something?

I agree. Drinking right after or while I eat makes me even redder too. I usually wait at least two hours after I eat before I start drinking. I take four Pepcid AC Max and I'm good for the whole night!!...no side effects either!
Someone should do a controlled experiment to see which is the best- Pepcid, Zantac or Tagamet. I've only tried Pepcid.
interesting article about H2's...
well for the 1st time last weekend i treid 4 pecid complete (40mg of famotidine total), within the 1st hr i had a little flush but nothing that anyone would have said anything, after that i looked fine! there was no redness @ all, no bloaty patches, fast pulse beats in my head etc... but the only thing is i couldnt get piSSed!!! i was downing glass after glass of wine and i could only get a little head on! oh well, i'll try some more experimenting!
Well, these are some interesting findings. I just happened to find this board from google.
With me, it's kind of odd. I will always get red, but it will go away as I have more drinks. Most of the time, it will only be superficial: my face will turn red. Sometimes though, my face will get especially red, and won't go away. This is accompanied by a pounding heart/head, and tired/dizziness. It seems like the effects are multiplied. These are the worst.
As some of you have mentioned, I also found that food makes a difference in how I feel when I drink. I've found that if I drink shortly after I've eaten, or eat while drinking, it is very likely that I will feel the worse of the two scenarios I mentioned above. Not to gross anyone out, but in the past, when I've felt that way because of the mixture of food and alcohol, I've made myself throw up (or just thrown up) in order to feel better.
Surprisingly, this would make me feel almost instantly better. No more pounding, and reduced redness. Needless to say, I try my hardest not to mix food with alcohol.
I'm about 5'9, 160lbs male, and can have an average of 9-11 drinks on a drinking night, so I guess i'm not too bad relatively speaking. It's still frustrating sometimes though having to worry about the redness issue all the time. I'll be sure to try some Pepcid, and we'll see what happens next time! I'll be sure to post results.
hey mellow yellow, don't clog up this board with your miscellaneous ramblings. just post your results and experiences with H2's.
I tried the Pepcid AC Maximum last night and had almost no noticable redness! I took three about 50 minutes before I drank and then I got a little nervous that I would turn beet-red and took two more about 30 minutes before. To be honest, I was a bit skeptical and didn't think it would work having tried antihistamines, tums, vitamin C, etc. in the past with no results. Well, thank God I was wrong!!! This post has really turned out to be a social lifesaver for me!! Someone should contact the Johnson & Johnson/Merck marketing people and tell them to start marketing it to billion+ in Asia cursed with the "Asian Flush". Oh, and does five work better than three or was I going overboard?
Thanks all!

5??? haha maybe ill try that first..... w0w, i cant wait till i can drink again and try this out!!!! i get horribly red and like another said in a previous post, we must constantly explain that were okay and not dying... gettin dark red is so embarrasin!!! i only drink around close friends cuz they understand lol..... 60mg should do the trick =o)
I tried the Pepcid AC max, and I had mixed results. I took two 20mg pills about 45 mins before drinking. I then had about four shots of Smirnoff within 60 mins, which is about what I can usually handle before turning bright red and feeling the blood pound in my head. This time, I didn't turn nearly as red as I usually do, but I felt extremely drunk and sick. I was only slightly pink but I was hunched over the toilet throwing up, which never has happened to me before. The next morning, my memory was vague about what I did the night before and I was very hungover. I think the Pepcid made me drunker faster, although it did keep my face from turning beet-red. I even felt sick in the morning - and with only four shots! I don't know... does anyone have any other suggestions about what to take to cure the asian glow and also not make you super sick drunk?
I'm Norwegian/Japanese and I have this Asian blush problem. I have three brothers and one sister, two of my brother do not have this problem... they lucked out. But I still like to have a drink every now and then, but not as frequent as my brothers. I don't get any sick feelings but I do get a red in the cheek areas. Now I did try the Pepcid AC and for me it works. But when I take it, I have to wait the full 30-40 minutes for Pepcid to do its thing. Now if I don't wait the full 30-40 minutes it doesn't work. But there have been a couple of times when I was drinking "this is without Pepcid AC" and had absolutely no (Asian flush) problems at all. Now my theory is I ate something before and cured this problem. What ever I ate worked much better than Pepcid AC, but what I ate? I don't know. I know there is a cure for this problem, just a matter find out what these chemical are. This would take a pharmaceutical company and their chemist the find these compounds.
well after more experimenting & i'm cured! i tried 60mg of pecid ac and it worked, it tiny tiny bit blush @ the start but nothing to be worried about, i'm sooooooooooo happy! now to try more experimenting with this pecid ac stuff!
Hi all - really interesting stuff! I also have this, and usually I get the swelling around the neck (sometimes not until the next morning after I wake up and think, 'ack not again!', after which I enjoy a week of rash and possibly lizard skin if it weeps...).
By the sound of things, my reaction is a bit more severe to just the facial redness that other people have described. Has anyone here had such severe reactions before, and are able to comment on whether pepcid AC will also help in these cases? Does it only help during the initial metabolism phase, or does it nullify the production of the acid outright, so that it's not even a delayed problem?
Also, once you get swelling (hives?), is there anything in particular that you can do about it other than waiting it out?
Thanks!
Sanfy
Been following this thread for a while. All interesting stuff. I've been taking Pecid AC Maximum Strength to combat asian glow for sometime now. It usually works pretty well, definitely curbs the full-on beet redness that I would normally get, leaving me with semi-rosy cheeks most of the time. And the rosiness itself goes away after about 2 hours of drinking.
I take TWO 10mg tablets of Pepcid AC Max. However, I think that the effectiveness of this dosage is dropping, as I've still gotten red the last few times I took it (although still not as beet-red I'd get without any pepcid). I'm worried to up the dosage, since the box says you should limit your intake to TWO tablets a day..
Anyone have any insight on adverse side effects of taking Pepcid AC Max over a long period of time (and usually once a week). Or anything on taking more than two 10mg tablets a day?
Pepcid AC max is 20 mg.
