yeah thanks for your advice steph. moderation is probably the best move but i didnt know if taking an antacid tablet for people with asian flush to reduce flushing was like taking a asthma medication for a person with asstma.. if you know what i mean?!
i have tried to sort of research the'asian flush' quite a bit an i understand it might be due to our bodies not breaking down the alcohol efficiently.
but could facial flushing be due to an allergic reaction to sulphites and preservitives in wine and beer etc rather than the alcohol itself?
i was just wondering if anyone knew anything about that, and if they have tried maybe organic wine etc an noticed reduced flushing?
just a thought..
right, i tried gavilast tablets which is ranitidine 75mg and it didint work for me. i had english breakfast with toast and butter around 11 and didnt eat anything for the rest of the day apart from a starbucks frap at 2.00 ish
i took 2 tablets around 7.30 waiting for 1hr before drinking. didnt work cos my face turned the usual red, heartbeat quickened and rather uncomfortable. maybe i need to get over the first drink but it was very hard to cary on with the symptoms
im gonna try pepcid chewables which is the famatidine version and see how that goes. maybe like echeng says, i shouldnt of had the dairy (on toast and in the coffee) but i thought maybe it would had digested by then.....
Hi everyone! Male 33, 145 lbs 5'5 100% Vietnamese. I read Pages 1-11 and 35-37. Man, that is a lot of reading. I've been drinking mostly weekends for 15 years or so. Mostly I drink beer and usually 1-3 beers at a time. Usually 1/8 of a can (a couple of sips) would get my face beet red. Sometimes, my redness would last the whole night and other times it would last for 2-3 hours. I would get a faster heart beat and eventually my body would feel hot and itchy...but only after drinking to get smashed. It never really bothered me because I guess I just really didn't care all that much. But then again, I never drank all that much either. So...I'm in. Just took 2 Pepcid AC tabs max strength (20 mg each) at the same time with a tall glass of water. Going to wait 30 mins and start drinking some shots of hennesy. I at 2 slices of bad pizza 1.5 hours ago and had a can of Coke Classic. I'll report back on the results later.
im 100% korean
my mom can drink like a fish
but my dad can't even handle one shot of soju
i'm pretty sure i've got my dad's genes because i get the super red face, and body, and the fast heartbeat and nausea
i've started taking pepcid ac because a friend of mine told me about it
it works wonders for her, but i still turn crazy red and get all the symptoms
am i doing something wrong?
i take two pepcid max about thirty mins before drinking and i'm 5'5 and 120 lbs
also i dont think its because i can't handle the alchohol because
ive never thrown up or gotten a hangover, and i keep up with my white guy friends :P please help!
I've been prepping H2-blockers before drinking since '95, and have gone through numerous trials and errors to find the right "regimen" for best alcohol tolerance. Although this method may not work for everyone, it has worked quite well for me.
First, take the H2-blocker [I use zantac (generic- ranitidine) 75 - 150 mg] ON AN EMPTY STOMACH approximately 20-30 minutes before drinking.
Second, eat some food approximately 10 minutes after you've taken the H2-blocker. This gives time for the medication to be absorbed and also decreases the rate of initial alcohol absorption. I noticed that if you start off drinking light (like beer) first, then you can hit the hard stuff as much as you want later.
Third, proceed to get intoxicated.
If you plan on a long night of drinking, bring an extra pill of H2-blocker, you can pop it approximately 3 hours later
Oh yeah, please drink responsibly, but if you can't, for god's sake find a designated driver. Happy drinking.
I am only 1/4 Japanese but I experience the "Asian Flush" everytime I drink. It usually starts out as a blotchiness on my neck and chest and works its way up to my face. My heart rate goes up considerably and I feel like I run out of breath easily. I'll walk like 2 blocks and start breathing heavily. Does anyone else get that?
Also, I had never heard of using Pepcid or the like but I have recently tried allergy meds (which I take for seasonal allergies), similar to Claritin and I didn't turn red at all and the other symptoms were way less severe. Has anyone heard of those meds helping?
I am so glad I found this, it has been very helpful. It's good to know there are others out there with this and that there are ways to fight it. It's pretty embarassing and I never understood why it happened until now.
Hi everybody. I've been reading up a lot on these posts for the last few days and it's good to know it the whole Pepcid AC thing really does help a lot of people. Unfortunately there seem to be some exception to the case. I haven't tried it yet but I'm eager and anxious to. My symptoms include turning beet red, getting the chills, occasionally get small headaches, and I would be chilly but my body gives off extreme heat. The most irritating of all though is that my heart beats unbelievably fast. I can deal with the redness and the heat but the heart beating nearly give me panic attacks.
Quick question for anyone out there, is there a difference between drinking beer/wine and other hard liquor such as tequila or vodka? I usually get red after 3/4 of a beer or barely one glass of wine. But when I drink Aleze, and ONLY Aleze I can down around three and I can still handle it.
Anyway, I'm sincerely hoping it will help me, even just a little... the inability to drink (in my case, at all) is extremely bad for my social life. I'm sure you all understand. Any replies would be appreciated, thank you.
Right, one more question: If H2 blockers do in fact help our symptoms to allow certain people, like me, to drink more than one drink, could this eventually help us build up our tolerance in our body enough that we can ween ourselves off H2? I don't know if this makes any sense, but for some people it may not be asian flush, it could be just low alcohol tolerance that they need to build up on. Or are we doomed to have to take H2 everytime before we drink for the rest of our lives?
Hey Jubes,
Welcome :)
I think that most of us have certain drinks that are worse than others.
For me, the worst is wine. Anything else seems to be ok but the cream liquors can make you feel sick if you drink lots of them, although I think that's true for the general population too!
Some people seem to be able to build up a 'tolerance' to alcohol if they drink a little bit regularly, but it's not true for everyone.
It seems that we are all doomed to pop pills in order to avoid the dreaded tomato face!
But be warned... some people have mentioned that they have built up a tolerance to pepcid! This means that they have to take more pills to do the same job that less pills did before. This is dangerous cos pepcid can only be taken in moderation and the stuff that we can't break down is slightly carcinogenic so really we shouldn't be drinking at all!
As always, do your due diligence with our advice, we are NOT doctors.
Be careful, have fun.
THanks for the reply Steph. I really only want some help getting through a beer or two every couple of weeks, hopefully Pepcid Ac will help me that much. Good luck to you all!
hey i reAd that ru 21 does what we are missing
In simple terms, when you put alcohol in to your body an enzyme is produced which turns alcohol in to Acetaldehyde (a toxic byproduct which is processed through the liver)
Taking RU-21 when you drink stops the body producing this enzyme...
No nasty enzyme means no Acetaldehyde... No toxins means no nasty morning after...
Rather than taking products to ease the pain the following morning, covering up the symptoms
DO YOU THINK IT WORKKKS? =D
Hey everyone, last night i tried taking some pepcid ac maximum strength before i drank and it really worked!! I took two 20mg tablets about 45 minutes before i started drinking, with about 3/4 of a water bottle. when i started drinking i made a beast mixed drink of vodka and orange soda, with about 5 shots in it ( i dont mess around when i drink). we started to play a drinking game called kings, and soon enough, i felt like i had turned beet red like always, with the feeling that i was radiating heat and an increased pulse. but when i asked my friends how red i was, they said i looked normal, with maybe a slight blush of the cheeks and eyes, but no more than any other regular drinker. i was amazed and went out with a lot more confidence... i couldnt believe that i didnt look red at all! previously, i had asked my docter if trying pepcid would work. he said that i should try it, that it couldnt hurt me. Im a 19 year old, 175lb half chinese, half german/irish college kid that parties pretty hard every weekend. i suggest that everyone try it, i know i will be using this stuff every weekend! =]
could you drink before though?
Hi people, I am a 100% chinese and have been taking 1x generic ranitidine 150mg along with 1x Loratadine 10mg around 45mins (read about this in an experiment mentioned in this thread) before I starting drinking since last sept. Also, I won't eat anything if I'm drinking as I understand from some of the users here that it will reduce the effectiveness of the H2 Blockers, esp spicy food. My usual intake per night is at least 5 - 7 shots of liquor . Has not tried Pepcid as it is difficult to find it in my country.
Results:
My face still turn red on occasions, though not beet red like last time. But after a while, you can still feel the face burning up and pounding even though it is not that beet red. I have taken around 40 - 50 pills of ranitidine since last sept (actually I cant remember the total), no side effects as of now. As for the impact of Loratadine, can't really comment on it as I have not tried ranitidine without it. One particular thing I noticed is that the blocked nose I usually get when I drink stopped, not sure if this is the works of Loratadine or Ranitidine. However, my face still turned rather red when I'm experimenting with alcohols I hardly consume. Also, as I have not experienced hangover before, I can't share any experience(s) as to whether the medication helps with preventing/ stopping hangovers as mentioned by sweetpea.
Lastly, I don't think I have developed a tolerance for ranitidine yet. (I only take 1 pill per night). If you guys have any qns, feel free to ask and I'll answer them if I remember to pop by here when I'm here.
p.s. : I'm tipsy now and it is the main reason as to why I actually bothered with typing such a long post. Pardon me if the language/ grammar is weird/ wrong :)
CHEERS!
i usually use a combo of zantac and pepcid max (two pepcid max, one zantac, sometimes vitamin c) and it works fine. i prefer to drink without it though and just get embarassingly red, because i think taking antihistamines with alcohol is not good for you. i just want to comment that the H2 blocker is just a superficial cure that masks the red face without eliminating acetaldehyde, which causes cancer.
there is another post on this website that has a link to a real cure that has been researched but has not been developed-

^I agree, but I've just chose not to even drink really anymore. I turn down a LOT of drinks and it sucks, but whatever. I really hope that sometime in my life they carry out that cure lol
yeah but why is everyone here waiting for someone else to find a real cure? this site gets a LOT of visits, so there are tons of people who are interested, and companies like Cheerz hangover are the only ones that know about this site, and Cheerz is a total fraud.
i think we should form a group and maybe have eric cheng pool money for us and we can donate it to acetaldehyde research (which is CANCEROUS) by the way, so that we all, and billions of people in the future, can do without this very inconvenient problem.
i think we are all assuming the same thing- that someone else will get it together and come up with a cure. but until that someone knows that there are people who are willing to help and support him/her they are going to research topics that seem the most relevant or useful. ive read a lot of post that are like 'hey, were asians!! asians are smart! we should have a cure by now!!'. this is not only stereotyping asians, it also shows how passive our attitude is toward our situation. most of us have lives but i think spending a little time on curing this is worth it!
Any long term effects of taking Pepcid max before drinking? Let's assume you drink heavily once a week taking 20mg.
I tried somethign a tad different on Sat nite as a tester but i need to explain a few things that day.
I did have dairy a coffee in the morning and a ham & cheese croissant.
Had various food thru the day.
last thing i ate was about 4pm and that was a pie.
at about nearly 8pm i had 2 pepcid ( i refuse to take anymore because i dont want to build up a resistance to it). i also had about a tablespoon of honey and hot water. about 45 mins later i had my first beer and that took about 45 mins to drink.
Redness was low, infact i didnt feel my face getting to red. Not that much flush thru the nite and OMG did i drink myself into a stupor on sat nite!!!!
So this high fructose thing.. yeah it could work!!! I have to try it out again! I'll update findings and different scenarios.

n-acetylcysteine is the answer, i'm convinced of it and the only question for me is dosage.
hey all,
it's comforting to know that there are so many people out there fighting the asian glow!
when drinking, i have alot of the common symptoms that others have listed: increased heart rate, overwhelming sleepiness, beet face, and splotchy arms. for awhile i just avoided drinking all together because i always felt nauseous and would vomit after one drink.
i tried the pepcid ac thing and it seems to be working for me. i try to avoid dairy for the whole day, and usually take it about 2 hours after i eat a meal and one hour before i start drinking. it's sad that alot of planning goes into this! i still get a bit red - but no more racing heart beat and nausea. i can actually get good and drunk, without feeling bloated or like i have to throw up. i only do the pepcid when i know i'll be drinking alot, which is maybe once week.
thanks for all the helpful posts :)

yeah i agree and ive tried it but it doesnt work very well for me. at all. i dont know if the problem is dosage, absorption, or some kind of chemistry going on in the body that is preventing the NAC from neutralizing the acetaldehyde quickly
Does anyone have any personal experience with the chewable pepcid tabs vs the pill form? The effectiveness of it and the amount of time it takes to kick in (is it any better/quicker)?
Also, what is this n-acetylcysteine you guys were mentioning?
Hey folks,
I found this info on long-term use of pepcid and the like. I am also very interested in the long-term side-effects.
