Topic: Hello. I am Asian.

Alright, I'm 17 years olds, male, asian, about 5'8 145ish lbs. Yes I know I'm not supposed to drink. Anyways, a couple of days ago I went to a K-bar (karoake) with some friends. This was my first time drinking so much. in the past, I drank maybe 2-3 gulps of budweiser and my face starts to burn. Anyways, back on topic, so we were playing dice games and I kept losing, so I had a couple of shots of Red Wine mixed with a little bit of smirnoff (maybe 6 shots?). I also drank one entire bottle of corona and another smirnoff. I was feeling the intense heat all over my face. I was sweating like a bitch, then started to turn all red all over my body. It wasnt itchy at first. Later, i felt drunk knowing it was my first time. and threw up maybe twice. I had the shittiest headache and i wasn't able to sleep. I also felt cold, chilly or w/e, and I took a tylenol to help ease the pain. When I woke up, my WHOLE body was itching, there were spots(red and white) all over my body and I started to get scared because I thought it could be an allergic reaction to the alcohol. upon reading the posts in this forum (which was very helpful), I realized that I'm a victim of the asian flush :[ . I havent tried Pepcid AC or anything yet, but I'll really like to drink in the future. So I have a coupla questions, and please answer ! :

1. Is it possible to build a tolerance to the alcohol? Can your body get used to the alcohol?
2. Does the damn itchiness ever stop? it's been 48 hours ...
3. is it possible that I become sort of immune to the symptoms without taking the pepcid?
and for those who has the itchiness/hives problem, if you consistently drink or TRAIN your body to the alcohol, will the hives problem go away? what about the alcohol tolerance? will drinking daily or weekly help you take in more alcohol?

thanks in advance guys!

Re: Hello. I am Asian.

Also about building up a tolerance- Ive found in my experience that drinking regularly only helps a little bit.

My guess is that the problem is you start breaking down alcohol more quickly as well as acetaldehyde, and since your alcohol dehydrogenase works fine, your ability to break down ethanol goes up faster than your ability to break down acetaldehyde, and you end up with the same problem that you had originally, because the issue is the ratio of alcohol dehydrogenase activity to acetaldehyde dehydrogenase activity. (1:1) would be ideal, or less, like 1:2, which means you process acetaldehyde twice as fast as ethanol, which means basically no acetaldehyde in your bloodstream.

However, Ive read about the MEOS (microsomal ethanol oxidizing system) that also breaks down alcohol independently of alcohol and acetaldehyde dehydrogenase in your body.  this system works quicker the more you drink, so alcoholics especially have a very active MEOS that ends up processing more alcohol than the normal enzymatic route.  I know this from reading around the internet, I am not a biologist or anything but this information makes sense to me based on my changing tolerance over the past few years.

ALSO a few month ago I went to the doctor because my liver was aching (I was drinking alot even though I get red) and he told me to take a few weeks off.  So I took two weeks off and when I drank again I got red but it wasn't that bad, and I got pleasantly buzzed because my alcohol dehydrogenase had gone back down to its normal levels, so my breakdown of ethanol was much slower, resulting in a little bit of tipsiness (yay).

What bothers me is that when we red-face asians go out drinking with other non-blushing asians or non asians we are getting ready for at best a very heady buzz or at worst a puke in the bushes, and other people are getting a really nice, clear-headed ethanol buzz.  drinking a little without having to feel acetaldehyde in your blood (you guys probably know what that feels like) would be really nice.

Re: Hello. I am Asian.

i think the biggest problem with with the asian flush is damn itching. i cant bear it anymore how to i reduce, if i scratch it will it go away faster or do more harm...(feel good scratching it tho...) i dont care about the other effect just the itching...its so painful

Re: Hello. I am Asian.

When I drink I not only get the Asian Flush but my forearms swell up and itch.  I asked on MedHelp and someone told me I should take an antihistamine like cetrizine an hour before I drink.  Cetrizine stops the H1 receptors.

Re: Hello. I am Asian.

A few tips:

- Use Pepcid AC as described on this forum.

- Drink slowly (like 1 beer over 30 minutes to an hour), avoid taking shots or sculling.

- Build up a tolerance, bearing in mind the speculated cancer risks associated with drinking.

- Find out which type of alcohol best agrees with your body.

- Drink water

Best of Luck,

Re: Hello. I am Asian.

It sounds like you either had an allergic reaction or a form of alcohol poisoning. My friends have asian flush all of the time, but never mention itching. They do talk about using pepcid ac to combat the effects of having a red face. Not sure if that works though. Having a red face with consumption of a large amount of alcohol is a common side effect it seems to me.

Re: Hello. I am Asian.

I'm thinking you have an allergic reaction. I have the same problem myself and been like this for 8 years now, or since I started drinking. nz pokies
