Who says brushless gimbals need to be attached to multirotor aircraft? I took a Rotorpixel HERO3 brushless gimbal and adapted it into a handheld GoPro stabilization system by adding an Opteka X-Grip, 2S LiPo battery, 4 x AA battery housing, and servo tester. Freefly Systems made news at NAB this year by announcing the MōVI, a high-end, stabilized camera platform ...

Once you have a 2-axis gimbal on your quadcopter, it becomes really easy to take aerial panoramas. I sent my DJI Phantom quadcopter up into the air on GPS lock mode with the GoPro 3 camera taking pictures in timelapse mode—1 picture every 2 seconds. I spun the Phantom around once, capturing a full spin (360º) in ...

I set up a Rotorpixel Gimbal Hero 3 today (made specifically for the GoPro HERO3 camera), and it is totally awesome.  The GoPro Hero 3 camera just snaps into the camera mount, and the whole gimbal can be powered off of the auxiliary power lead on a DJI Phantom quadcopter. The isolation mount is flexible, so ...

DJI Phantom with Rotorpixel Gimbal Lite and wire-isolation mount, GoPro HERO3 Black camera set to 2.7K/30p, Graupner carbon-fiber props, and landing gear extensions. It was a really windy day—you’ll see the props in the frame as the quad angles itself to stay ...

DJI Phantom Quadcopter FPV Deconstruction

Jan 28, 2014: Updated post is here (but if you’re a newbie, the content in this post is still very relevant). Multi-rotor aircraft like the DJI Phantom quadcopter are finally being sold, ready-to-fly, in a way that is accessible to mass-market consumers. However, the first modification a multi-rotor owner makes immediately pushes them into the hobbyist realm, which ...

Keri sent me one of the early Rotorpixel Gimbal Lite prototypes, which I promptly attached to my DJI Phantom quadcopter and sent into the air, holding a GoPro HERO3 Black camera. The gimbal controllers and motors are being powered by Phantom’s auxiliary power cable (with JST connectors soldered on).

Rotorpixel Gimbal Lite prototype on a DJI Phantom quadcopter. Verdict: it works very well. It is incredible to have such stable video platform from such a small platform. On a Turnigy Nano-Tech 2200MAh 45-90C LiPo battery, I got just over 6 minutes of flight time (no crazy stunts). This isn’t great, for flight time, but the ...
