I have chosen to use a Ricoh GR APS-C camera in the air because it is the lightest camera with an APS-C-sized sensor, and it’s great to see others hacking large-sensor cameras onto various small-ish multicopters, as well. Philipp Stark recently attached his Fuji X100S camera to a small hexacopter. The X100S uses an old-school ...

My Ricoh GR camera mount for the DJI Phantom 2 continues to evolve. The first version used the top vibration dampener plate of the Phantom 2 Vision (the dampener assembly is available for $10 from dealers), a bottom plate laser cut for me by Keri Wilk, and an inexpensive Giotto mini-ballhead. I wrote about the ...

This seems to be my new morning ritual. I wander downstairs to check out the newest 3D print I made, which is inevitably some kind of adapter for mounting cameras on to quadcopters. This piece will be used to mount my Ricoh GR camera to my Phantom 2 in a recessed way, closer to the ...

Hello, everyone! I’ve created a new Skypixel Aerial Imaging mailing list. I’ll use the list to send out occasional summaries of Skypixel content and information about aerial imaging using multicopters. There will be no spam, and I’ll never sell your contact information. Click here to join mailing list. (Source: https://player.vimeo.com/)

FPV and H3-2D gimbal installation on DJI Phantom 2

This post is an evolution of my old FPV Deconstruction post. Yesterday, I installed a DJI Zenmuse H3-2D brushless gimbal for the Phantom 2 quadcopter along with a Boscam TS-353 5.8Ghz FPV video transmitter. The gimbal installation took less than 10 minutes, and the FPV transmitter installation, not much longer. Here’s how to do it. ...

I just received my Phantom 2 quadcopter with H3-2D gimbal, and was pleased to see that DJI has incorporated “anti-drop” screws into their vibration mount. You no longer have to worry about the entire gimbal and camera assembly coming completely off of the quadcopter. Update: Steve Doll informs me that other gimbal designs solve this ...

For both video and stills, you want the the $869 DJI Phantom 2 with Zenmuse H3-2D gimbal (plus GoPro camera). For stills only, you want the $1199 DJI Phantom 2 Vision, which ...

Here are some aerial shots taken this morning in Santa Cruz with Tom Gruber and John Markoff. The aerial shots were taken with a Ricoh GR APS-C compact camera mounted to a Phantom 2 (with FPV and remote shutter release). Land shots taken with a Sony RX1R. The technical post about how to do this ...

Sample 100% crop from Ricoh GR APS-C camera mounted on Phantom 2 quadcopter. View the above example at 1280 pixels to see a 100% crop from the camera. I was out playing with Tom Gruber and John Markoff this morning in Santa Cruz, and took some sample shots with a Ricoh GR camera mounted on ...
