I sent a Phantom through a hole in the canopy for some shots of the redwood forest from above. It was actually a little scary—no wind in the forest, but lots of wind above it. During one flight from a clearing, the Phantom lost GPS. The light on the back turned yellow, and no amount ...

3 dusk flights at Scripps Park in La Jolla, San Diego, featuring sea lions, cormorants, crashing waves, and a few tourists. Still images here. DJI Phantom with gimbal and GoPro HERO3 camera on 1080p/60 Medium / ProTune and conformed to 24p in Final Cut Pro X. Music: Yo-Yo Ma, playing the Sarabande from Bach’s 6th Unaccompanied ...

I went to La Jolla today to fly Phantoms around with Mark Peterson and Norm Hamson. I had hoped to be able to capture shots of La Jolla from the air during a beautiful sunset, but thick clouds blanketed the horizon, giving us a quick path to darkness at dusk. Every time we take quadcopters ...

I spent the morning flying around San Diego with Mark Petersen (another Phantom pilot). We went to Mission Beach Park and Scripps Pier and had absolutely perfect flying conditions. Mark flew his first FPV flight—always fun to watch the first one! 🙂

The Sausalito Gate 6 houseboat co-op is a fragile remnant of times past. Its days are numbered, as it is scheduled to be converted into something very different in 2014. Meredith Yayanos is currently staying at the co-op, and through her, I met a few of the residents, all of whom seem to be on ...

Shooting into the sun gives the scene way too large a dynamic range to successfully capture using a GoPro. Next time, I will probably spot meter to expose the clouds successfully. Also, there was a lot of wind, which makes for shaky ...

Here are some behind-the-scenes shots from Tonga, which were taken by my good friend, Julian Cohen. Although I mostly flew from the boat, I did a couple beach launches, as well. It’s important to have a tough, waterproof case for work like this. My entire Phantom with FPV and 6-8 batteries fits in a single ...

I absolutely love the aerial perspective. This is a picture of my wife snorkeling outside of Swallows Cave in Vava’u, Tonga. You can see the little mushroom island’s entire underwater reef structure.

Aerial footage taken in Tonga, September, 2013. Huge thanks to Julian and Ildi Cohen and the crew of the S/Y Bella Principessa for their hospitality (I used the catamaran as a launch platform).
