I spent yesterday afternoon and early this morning watching icebergs flow out of Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon (Jökulsárlón) near Vatnajokull, Iceland. The glacier calves into a lagoon (you can hear the crack way out in the distance), and at each outgoing tide, icebergs flow out into the ocean and are pushed onto the black-sand beach by waves. We are in the so-called “shoulder season” here in Iceland, which means that it is not yet overrun with tourists. There were about a dozen people at the beach yesterday, but this morning, it was completely empty. I saw one other couple for a few minutes, and spent the next two hours alone watching ice and ocean do its thing.
