I have chosen to use a Ricoh GR APS-C camera in the air because it is the lightest camera with an APS-C-sized sensor, and it’s great to see others hacking large-sensor cameras onto various small-ish multicopters, as well. Philipp Stark recently attached his Fuji X100S camera to a small hexacopter. The X100S uses an old-school cable release, so Stark rigged a servo up to the cable release in order to depress the shutter button remotely. His complete build album is available online. Stark says that the next steps are to put vibration isolation between the camera and aircraft, and to balance the props.

Other people I know are attempting to use the Sony RX100 II, a compact camera that shoots both great stills and videos. Like the Fuji X100S, the Sony RX100 has no remote shutter release capability, so people are using servos to physically depress the shutter button.
