Gunnar bor Brynjarsson is our hero! Without him, we would have lost our prototype Phantom 3 in a freak snow storm in Iceland. Ferdinand, you owe him big time. 😉
During a car-chase flight on the way back from the volcano, a snow storm blew in, and winds were blowing hard, probably between 40-50 knots. Ferdinand was piloting and was unable to fly the Phantom 3 back to us when we stopped to take a quick break. Over Lightbridge, we watched as our caravan became smaller and smaller in the viewfinder, until we could no longer see the cars in the frame. Eventually, the Phantom ran out of battery power and landed… somewhere out in the snow on a huge plain between mountain ranges. We were able to head in the rough direction of the Phantom landing using the DJI Pilot app’s built-in map, but our connection was sporadic, and eventually, the Phantom’s battery died (it was sitting in the snow in sub-freezing temperatures, so it didn’t stay alive long after the automatic landing).
INCREDIBLY, Gunnar somehow drove straight to the Phantom 3 and found it! The winds and snow made it pretty much impossible to see, and we have no idea how he did it. Locals are always the best experts. Thank you, Gunnar!
