Somehow, I have become an underwater photographer.

Since April of 2001, underwater photography has been bubbling its way up my list of interests, and how now become one of the dominant activities that defines who I am. I shoot professionally, but not full time.

I have been running for a few years now, which is now considered the best online resource for underwater digital photography. It's a fantastic, friendly community of people who help to keep underwater photography fun. I would not have come nearly this far in such a short period of time without the constant friendship of a few luminaries in the community -- most notably, professional photographers Jim Watt, David Fleetham, Jim Abernethy, Andy Sallmon, and Steve Drogin. Thanks also to my non-diver friends who deal with my periodic absenses from their lives.

In the past couple of years I have managed to get myself out to some interesting places. Even though most "normal" people consider these places to be exotic, hanging out with traveling divers has shown me that everything is relative; most of the folk I meet on the road have been to many places whose names I've never even seen in print. It's their stories and never-ending enthusiasm that have awakened my own sense of underwater adventure.

I have a mailing list where I periodically send out announcements about trip journals and expeditions. Sign up, if you are interested!

sea & sea canon d60 housing

When I started underwater photography back in April of 2001, I was shooting with an Ikelite-housed Nikon Coolpix 990 and an Ikelite Substrobe 200, but I quickly out-grew that setup and moved on to a more responsive rig once affordable digital SLRs hit the market.

For two years, I shot with a Canon D60 Digital SLR housed in a Sea & Sea Canon D60 housing with two Ikelite Substrobe DS-125 strobes held by ULCS arms. I now shoot with a Canon 1Ds Mk III Digital SLR housed in a Seacam housing, with Ikelite and Inon strobes.
