Posted at 01:43 AM PST: "Australia"

Dec 31, 2002 -> Jan 7, 2003: "The Yongala Wreck has the most amazing marine wildlife of any place I've ever been. Soft corals and schools of small fish completely cover the entire surface of the vessel, and many enormous specimens of fish and turtles patrol the area. Individual fish are simply larger than they are elsewhere. There is an enormous queensland grouper named "Boris" who lives here. Boris is probably over six feet long, and is always surrounded by a small school of little fish. Mia told us a story about a Swedish fellow who got his head stuck in Boris' mouth a year ago..." Glad to see you a good time in Australia. Sydney is my hometown. In fact I work just across from the Botanical Gardens.

Sydney's Chinatown is half full of tourists from China and there abouts, so the "Chinese" content can be high.

Sydney is also quite a sprawling city like LA, where you need a car to get around to the fun nite spots.

Did you get around to Milford Sound in Fiordland when you were in NZ? The glacier moraine and mountains there are incredible.

Great pics. Thanks for taking the time to put them up.

eric,
as usual, you seem to cram an awful lot of life and living into a small space of time. my hat's off, again.

As always, great pics. Great macro shots. The detail is sharp and a great inside into those "inaccessible areas" of the world ^_^

The word of the day is definitely "vicarious"

Strobes can damage certain animals, but I don't think it's been studied in depth (not that I know of, anyway). I know that you're not allowed to use flash photography on most cephalopods in aquariums, so when in the "wild", I try not to take too many exposures of the same octopus. Not sure about others. :)

as for trip costs, live-aboards generally cost about $200-$300/day (and up!). They're generally a good deal because you get a bed, all food, and 5 dives a day in locations generally unaccessible from shore. i'm a big fan. otherwise, you have to pack your stuff in the morning, go somewhere, get on a boat, do 2-3 dives, disembark, clean/pack up again, etc. it's a pain to do it from shore!

super neato!

does the flash on your camera have any damaging effect on the sealife? just wondering...

Did you see Frodo while you were there? :)

very cool pictures as usual eric. i was wondering where you had dissappeared to. ;-)

over the holidays i went diving for my first time in hawaii. and i think i might be hooked now.

btw, how much do mike ball's trips cost? couldn't find any quotes on his page.

As usual I had a great time reading your trip journal. Fantastic photos! I especially liked the macro shots from the last day. (It's clearly the photographer :) Some of the Yongola images almost looked composed in PS because the marine life was so dense. Very cool.

Fantastic shots Eric, I love your trip journals. Those clown fish love to pose for you. My favorite shot (if I have to pick one) is probably the porcelain crab and domino damsels. I hope that one prints as well as it looks on the web!

very cool, eric. i've seen glories quite a few times in the past, but never have been able to get my camera out in time. :)

whew! pretty amazing stuff, as usual.

oh, and i think that rainbow effect is called "glory".

let's see ... here's a page about it:
