Dead blue whale, northern California

The carcass of a dead 80-foot blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus) in northern California. Scientists suspect the whale was struck by a large boat before beaching itself. The whale ejected a fetus before she died. The fetus was on the beach not far from the mother.

    It looks like it has been dead a while and been predated upon, yes all pretty gross. Do you know if an aquarium or someone else wil be taking a closer or better look at cause of death?

    Not sure, Giles. There are a ton of news articles about the whale (they say the last blue whale to come up in this area was 30 years ago). Most photos that are online are from 5 days earlier, so it’s been rotting for at least that long.

    I am guessing it’s no where near any residential buildings, the stench must be pretty bad by now!
