The quest for the ultimate underwater photography travel case is one that will probably never end. I have used Pelican cases, Storm cases, Lightware cases, Samsonite luggage with Pelican dividers, coolers, and more. I’m always in the market for photography bags.
I was over at Backscatter the other day and ended up coming home with a brand-new Lowepro Pro Roller 3 rolling suitcase. Aside from the name of the brand (which thieves probably associate with camera gear), this suitcase, from the outside, is like any other semi-rigid suitcase. But inside, it’s a serious photography case… [full review @ wetpixel]
I grew up with many of the repercussions of the 228 Incident affecting our family members’ lives, even here in the States. It will be interesting to see a movie based (loosely, possibly?) on the events surrounding 228.
For sale: (SOLD)Seacam underwater housing for Canon 1D Mark III / Canon 1Ds Mark III
$4500 + shipping
Comes with handles, sacrificial zincs, dual S6 or N5 bulkheads, N5 remote socket wired to be compatible with Aquatica waterproof remote, and spares kit (extra o-rings, springs, cleaning/polishing oil).
Working perfectly, and in fantastic condition, considering that it has been on so many dives. I am constantly amazed that Seacam housings almost never look used. In fact, I have been stopped by customs on the way back into the country because they think the housing is new! My housing has a few wear marks and three very small rust marks (1-2mm in size) at the top.
Note: you need a viewfinder and ports to make this housing work. :) (read more »)
I’ve been mostly in the country for the past few months, but my travels start up again in a few weeks. In the next four months, I’ll be going to Colombia, France, Japan and Papua New Guinea.
There are a few things I always do periodically to make sure I’m ready for international travel:
Make sure travel health insurance is up to date. I just purchased a 12-month, multi-trip policy from HTH Worldwide called Travel Gap. It’s relatively inexpensive ($159 for “gold” coverage), but is health insurance only, meaning that it doesn’t cover trip delays, lost baggage, etc. It also features only minimal coverage for skiing and scuba diving, but since I have DAN coverage (see below), this isn’t a problem. I prefer multi-trip coverage because I travel so much that it is impractical to purchase a new policy for every trip.
Make sure equipment insurance is up to date. I have used both DEPP and DAN insurance for my underwater camera gear, and recommend both.
Charge up Iridium satellite phone. At $1.30/minute (500 minutes pre-paid), it’s always cheaper (per minute) to use a satellite phone than it is to use a mobile phone. Roadpost is my preferred pre-paid minute vendor. With a single email, my account representative can charge up my account using a credit card on file.
Be sure my mobile phone provider unlocks international roaming. There is nothing worse than having to use a pay phone to call AT&T or Verizon from abroad to activate roaming. I’ve done it more than once, and it’s expensive and annoying.
Subscribe to XGate compressed satellite email service. XGate is my preferred service because it allows me to continue to use my existing email program while doing all the things you want satellite email to do (namely, eliminate unnecessary network round trips, compress data streams, and allow attachment management). Email via satellite phone is impossible without a service like this. When I’m connected via satellite, I also use Little Snitch (Mac OS X) to ensure that only XGate has network access. This prevents applications from doing things like auto-updating on a 2400 baud connection. :)
Adam Lau and I spent Saturday night tearing down, photographing, and packing up my 14 aluminum prints. This morning, we drove them up to The G2 Gallery in Venice Beach, where they will be displayed as part of H20 from August 11 – September 20, 2009.
I’ll be at the G2 Gallery this coming Friday, August 14, 2009 from 6:30pm – 9pm for the opening reception. Please come say hi!
Christoph Rehage walks 4646km through China between November 9, 2007 and November 13, 2008 (via Jauder Ho)
All of the distance from Beijing to Ürümqi has been completed solely on foot, straight good old walking. There are instances where you can see me in the video sitting on a plane or riding a boat, but those are during breaks I had to take from walking, either to sort out bureaucracy issues or to take care of some personal things.
The core of this project is in fact my website www.thelongestway.com where I have posted my extensive travel diary, starting from day 1 (Nov 9th 2007) and describing every single day until the end one year later.

Group exhibition featuring photographers Elizabeth Carmel, Eric Cheng, Ron LeValley, and Michele Westmorland
Show Dates: August 11–September 20, 2009 Reception: August 14, 2009, 6–9 pm Location:The G2 Gallery
Covering the majority of the Earth’s surface area and comprising 55–78% of the human body, water is the essence of life. Given the abundance and irrefutable necessity of those three atoms (two hydrogen, one oxygen,) H2O is vulnerable to many threats that endanger not just the quality of water itself, but the multitudes of species that are sustained by it, including humans, who are susceptible to water shortages around the globe. Locally, water rationing has been government mandated. H2O examines the state of water at this critical juncture, exhibiting the work of photographers who present water in its most prevalent liquid state.(read more »)
I’ve had three girls staying at my place (for varying periods of time) this week: Hitomi is in town for a wedding, Vienna is pseudo-homeless as she bounces from place to place on tour, and Wendy would never have missed a visit from Hitomi.
It’s been fun to have so many people around. Normally, i’m a bit isolated because I work at home all the time… (read more »)
I had an interesting morning accompanying Vienna Teng to KFOG for her 8am interview and live performance on the air. Director Ang Lee was on immediately preceding Vienna, and when he was finished with his interview, we were introduced to him in the hallway.
“It’s a Taiwan morning,” he said, after we introduced ourselves as having Taiwanese roots. (read more »)

@johnolilly I use FileVault, but if I didn’t need some fast disk, I’d use PGP whole disk encrypt. W/ filevault, some backup types encrypted. in reply to johnolilly#
@johnolilly FileVault also makes me nervous, but it seems ok if you symlink out folders you don’t need to encrypt. #
Discovered news on BBC America while on the Virgin America flight. No mention of the word “twitter” in 1 hour. I’m sold!! :) #
