&lt;p&gt;I looked around in the settings and I think it may have to do with the ambient light sensor which is configured to automatically dim the display as the light level changes. For some reason it was getting set off at odd times.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;I have disabled it for now and it seems to have helped. It&#039;s under system prefs-&gt;display&lt;/p&gt;
