What to do, where to eat in Taiwan?

Aaron is headed out to Taiwan for a couple of weeks. Where should he eat? I assume he will be in Taipei for awhile, but that he will be wandering around the entire island as well. He also wants to know if there are any sites he should absolutely not miss.

And tips?

Ya! Welcome to this Gourmet heaven! Here are the most popular packages FYR: link

Must do in Taipei : Night market(Shihlin or Keelung),Beitou hot spring, temple ( Hsing Tien Temple or Longshan Temple), Old street ( Jioufen or Danshuei),National Palace Museum.

Hualien Taroko (scenery) ,Moon lake( i remember Eric has been there before..),Tainan(culture&food) and Kenting (water sports) are also recommended.

Besides the night market food,do not miss this one and arrive there before A.M.11:00 because there will be so many tourists in line…): Dintaifung Xinyi branch

    Cheers,

    Jenny

    Thanks for the tips!

So far, I’ve seen a lot of rain, a Dunkin’ Donuts (!), and a place billed as a memorial to Chiag Kai-shek, but don’t I dare call it that or one of the in-laws will kill me. ;) So, yeah, llooking for other options.

ditto what jenny said. the official travel site offers many options for travelers. taroko is my favorite, but not sure now is the best time to go since it’s cold and wet here.

in addition to jioufen & danshui, there is also maokong & shengkeng (famous for stinky tofu)which are accessible by both the mrt & a short bus ride.

a couple more night market options for aaron to choose from… taipei (gong-kuan, shita, tonhua), taichung (chung-hwa street, feng-chia)

http://www.trtc.com.tw/e/index.asp (taipei rail transit, locals call it the “mrt”)

    http://www.thsrc.com.tw/en/index.htm (taiwan high speed rail)

i’ve not taken the high speed rail yet but i do know that the mrt stops are designed around many of taipei’s touristy spots. one-day passes are available. just click on the tourist info for more details.

the annual lantern festival is held in various cities now & is worth checking out.

taiwan’s all about food, be it street or gourmet! if you are adventurous, try stinky tofu, snake soup from the snake alley/huaxi street (a short walk from long-shan temple), hotpot, 24-hour restaurants that serve dim-sum or traditional taiwanese breakfast. head down to tainan to try fried shrimp rolls & fish soup.

    have fun!
