Social network “import address book” feature

When I signed up for Twitter, it gave me the option to import both my address book and Livejournal friends in order to invite them to use the service. I hate intrusive methods of friend discovery and see this option offered often. Personally, I don’t like having my e-mail address(es) shared by friends to random services, so I don’t do it to others.

However, I’d gladly share my address book if the service used the data (transiently) for discovery instead of for active solicitation. I want to upload my data and see a list of everyone in my address book who has an account with the service, with an option to be immediately linked to them. Instead, we are often forced to search exhaustively for our friends, one by one. I’m sick of it.

    I signed up for twitter .. but like most other phone related services it doesn’t really work for me down here.

    I still don’t see the point of twitter either .. is it just to let anyone you have listed as a friend know your “status” ?

    I keep going back to it to find out if i can make it work .. I guess I have it in my AIM list now too .. but still don’t get it.

    Facebook does a good job of this: you can transiently “import” a contact list and see who is on and who isn’t, selectively add people as friends or send invites…all without actually importing the addresses into the system or necessarily spamming your contact list. Good stuff.

    Chester — good point re: Facebook.

    I’m also having problems because I use Address Book.app on Mac OS X. VCF exports are in the megabytes for some reason, perhaps because I have people’s pictures in the entries (?). As a result, no online VCF importing feature has successfully imported my address book. It’s pissing me off.
