A mayor improvement is to limit the size of the previews. Go to: Aperture - Preferences In the lower part of the menu you can set the size of the previews. I've never used Aperture, but I've heard that Lightroom has much better performance. I use it on a not-very-powerful Windows laptop and it runs very nicely.
