If Firefox starts outputting audio to a headset…

So, if Firefox crashes on your Mac OS X system and upon restart starts outputting audio to… oh, let’s say, a Plantronics USB headset instead of to your normal speakers, just unplug your headset and restart Firefox. The application will tell you that it has created new settings and will ask you if you want to use the new or original settings. Pick new, wait the 15 seconds for Firefox to do who-knows-what, plug in your headset again, and all will be well again.
What you shouldn’t do is try to find an audio output setting in Firefox or turn the volume on your mixer up and down repeatedly.
Note to Adam Nash: I am not bitching. I just couldn’t find this information on Google and therefore felt compelled to post a solution so that others won’t have to waste time should they have the same problem.
This Mac crossover won’t last .. you may as well just throw it away now ..
Eric, I need a Mac Pro to replace my Quad - perhaps we should talk? ;)
It’s done it twice now in two days. Now it’s getting annoying.
Eric, don’t get defensive. You know I love you. I think posts like this are actually great - some of my best blog posts have been finding a small answer to a problem (like iPhoto Library rebuilding) that was hard for me to find.
However, I will point out that since you know the VP of Engineering of Mozilla personally, you probably could get this issue fixed with an email rather than a blog post :)
Note to Alex: I called dibs on Eric’s Mac Pro if he decides to defect back to Windows.
Yeah, I could have reported it to him, but the last time I reported a (more serious) bug, he told me that if I fixed it myself he’d make sure it would get in the build. :)
What’s the problem Eric? Lost your C++ chops? Patches are accepted :->
Hey, Schrep. Damn! you check this site! ;)
I haven’t coded in C++ since 2002. I’ve pretty much only done C#, Java, and that fluffy web stuff since then. Not that I code very often these days…
Oh, and while we’re making fun of C++ chops, let’s bring up Nash for a minute… :)
Anyway, it would take me roughly forever to find out why Firefox randomly selects an audio device when it crashes in a certain way. Don’t you have experts over there who do such things? :)
Seriously - do you have a reproducible test case? Never heard of this specific bug so would love to know what you are doing.. Also - what extensions do you have installed?
I’ll take this to e-mail, Schrep. Thank you…
