A well-known problem, a Mac Pro running OS X (I’m running 10.4.8) won’t sleep when a Dell 30″ monitor is connected to it via USB (the Dell 30″ conveniently has a USB hub and card reader in it).
I’m happy to report that a combination of the D-Link QuickMedia DUB-H7 7-Port USB 2.0 Hub and Sandisk ImageMate 12-in-1 USB 2.0 Reader
work perfectly, allowing me to plug in all of my USB devices plus a card reader in a way that is still compatible with OS X sleep.
I have success with the Kensington Dome Hub and the same Sandisk reader. The Kensington PilotMouse on the other hand has to be unplugged for the machine to sleep properly.
I have a Belkin 15-in-1 card reader, and a Belkin 7-port USB hub. Both work great, sleep compatible with Mac OS X. Learned my lesson with the cheap stuff - not worth the hassles.
