Reef reflection in bubble under a Sarcophyton sp. leather coral
I’m really enjoying my time here in Papua New Guinea so far. We’re at Loloata at the moment and leave for Rabaul tomorrow to board the MV Febrina. The volcano in Rabaul is supposed to be spitting out smoke, so it should be interesting…
I’ve also posted a few more images from Loloata on Flickr. It’s quite a feat to post images from here, so I hope y’all appreciate it. ;)
A few days ago, Rob Kapilow deconstructed the Bach Double at Dinkelspiel Auditorium on Stanford Campus. Geoff Nuttall and Scott St. John played the solos, and all sorts of people I knew (the rest of the SLSQ plus Livia, Debra, and a bunch of students) supported them from within a small chamber orchestra. If you’ve never been to a Rob Kapilow deconstruction, you should definitely try to get to one (preferably with the SLSQ performing). They’re awesome.

On a whim, I joined Facebook a couple of weeks ago using my computer science e-mail address (@cs.stanford.edu). It made me feel old.
Add me as a friend, if you’re on it! Is it useful for alumni?
A well-known problem, a Mac Pro running OS X (I’m running 10.4.8) won’t sleep when a Dell 30″ monitor is connected to it via USB (the Dell 30″ conveniently has a USB hub and card reader in it).
I’m happy to report that a combination of the D-Link QuickMedia DUB-H7 7-Port USB 2.0 Hub
and Sandisk ImageMate 12-in-1 USB 2.0 Reader
work perfectly, allowing me to plug in all of my USB devices plus a card reader in a way that is still compatible with OS X sleep.
Dear North Korea,
Will you please stop scaring everyone with nuclear tests? I’m starting to get yanked out of line at airports for questioning and searching.
Your friend,
Eric
I don’t think I look like a sketchy guy. The recent North Korea news is the only thing I can think of that would cause the recent change in behavior.
On the other hand, it gave me the opportunity to have a nice pseudo-conversation in broken Spanish with the narcotics agent.

I just spent a week diving the Galapagos and experienced the best whale shark and hammerhead shark encounters I’ve ever had. More later… (read more »)
