Leaving the cage at Guadalupe

After our group left, Norb and I stayed for an additional 5 days out at Guadalupe with Lawrence and a boat full of interesting people. The three of us spent many hours down at 25′ in the cinema cage, which is really just a place to hang out in the water while great white sharks swim around. Only once did a white shark approach the down cage, but I wasn’t in the water at that time (too bad!).

I did something stupid, though, and it was only after the fact that it really sunk in.

I left the cage a few times to get shots of a shark approaching the surface cages and to get shots of the down cage itself. Great white sharks often ambush seals from below, and leaving the cage was a bad idea. However, I did stay under the boat (more or less) while out of the cage, and from what I understand, sharks are not likely to hit a target from below if its silhouette is not clearly defined.
