While I was in Boston last weekend, I stopped by Louie and Stephanie Leguia’s place to check out their line of Luis and Clark carbon fiber violins, violas, and cellos. The reputation of their carbon fiber instruments is good — and well-deserved. After trying out six of the cellos (and having a home-cooked dinner), I walked away a new owner. It will be a fantastic alternative to my Will Whedbee cello for travel — and, it’s just neat to own something so big made of carbon fiber (the gadget-geek in me is satiated!). :)
The cello was shipped to me overnight, and was still in tune when it arrived at my door.

My Luis and Clark cello!

Posing with Louie Leguia
Louie told me I was “the best-sounding photographer he had ever heard.” But I’ll bet I’m one of the only photographer/cellists he’s ever heard, so I shouldn’t let it get to my head. :)
By the way, my favorite quote from their website is:
And, as a by-product of the materials, if you play a wrong note and get mad, you can hurl it down from space and it won’t disintegrate as it reenters the earth’s atmosphere.
Very funny!
Holy crap that is pimp! You need to figure out a way to integrate it with your car and get some neons for it.

The cello is really handsome. I’m so envious now. I’m so touched after listening to your live recording of Beethoven (Got the download from the other page) and you know so much about computing and softwares, as well as photography! All of them are my interests (I play piano and do something related to architecture) but such a dummy when it comes to computer and softwares and coding, I wish I could do half of what you did!
Good God, that is SO badass!!!

Wow that is amazing! I really want one now. I’ve been playing cello for 8 years! How much was it?
You’ve inspired me- as soon as I get to Boston in three weeks, I’m looking for Luis + Clark. I’m attending the Bowdoin Music Festival again this summer, and I need something that’s going to sound good but be up to a bit of the BIMF rough life =).
The cello is priced at $6,539.00, the viola at $5,200.00, and the violin at $4,900.00.

It might be pimp but its a case of American ‘inventors’ stealing European thunder again - The French have been doing these for ages - check out Laurence’s violins and cello from the 90s made in Douan. I am happy to see this going into production and sounding great, but applying for a patent on something you didn’t invent….hisssssss
Hi Eric, came upon your site via Cor B. I was looking at the L&C carbon cello and I am very interested, I hear a lot of people here have one. Just wondering.. does this mean you could combine scuba diving with cello playing…. :-)
Hi, Christian - I guess I could, in theory, but it would only be for photos, since the vibrations necessary for sound would be hard to produce underwater. :)
