In the last week, Akismet (an excellent anti-spam-comment plug-in I use with Wordpress) has caught and filtered 6,123 spam comments in my journal here. I had to write my own anti-spam code back when I used b2, but since I had silent failure and no logging, I had no idea how many spam comments were actually being caught. 874.71 per day is a lot. I hate these people. Use Akismet. It works.
We’ve been using wordpress for a while now, but I hadn’t upgraded. I had also just turned comments off completely because of the amount of spam. Now, thanks to your post, I’ve upgraded and turned on Akismet and turned on comments. We blocked 513 spam comments yesterday! Thanks mega-shake!
Norm — I hear the version available for download on their Wordpress site right now is a bit buggy. Get the latest build instead of downloading what they have available. I signed up for the developer mailing list, but the latest build link they sent out was broken, so you’ll probably have to do it through SVN.
