Do any of you out there have experience with global pre-paid SIM cards for tri-band GSM phones? If so, I could certainly use some advice. I am looking for a card that will allow me to use the phone in the various areas I frequent (Taiwan, Indonesia, Ecuador, Bahamas, etc.), but I haven’t found any that are that expansive in their coverage.
I’ve just discovered that Verizon works in Taiwan, but the website says that it costs $0.69 for roaming, plus rented carrier charges. I’m afraid to use it.
I don’t know about global pre-paid SIM cards, but when I was in Taiwan this past July, I was able to purchase a local SIM card and use it in my unlocked T-mobile GSM tri-band phone. I had to ask a relative to buy the SIM card for me (it was called the “IF” card - I believe it’s pronounced “eye eff ka3″ rather than “if ka3″) because they say you need a Taiwanese ID to get it. Can try your luck tho - they’re available at 7-Elevens and cell phone shops. All incoming calls are free. Minimum card cost was 350NT for initial purchase, and can refill in minimum increments of 300NT.
thanks, caroline! the 7-11 person told us that they can’t sell them anymore (and that we’d have to go to a proper place to get one) but maybe we didn’t ask for the right thing.
i do have an unlocked GSM phone now. bought a cheapee one that ended up being the same price as i could have gotten it for in the states (from ebay).
Do the qi shi-yis in Taiwan sell slurpees?
I have one that i used all summer. will tell you about it.
