RedStart Design, Mandy’s company, is on Gizmodo! Buy some rings, y’all. They’re very cool. You can see a photo of my sister on the product page. I took the photo. :)

More info from their site:

The Subtle Safety™ Defensive Ring (patent pending)

Some 1.9 million women are physically assaulted annually in the United States, and 15 percent to 25 percent of all American women will report a sexual attack or rape at some time in their lives, according to studies conducted by the Justice Department and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. - August 15, 2004 ABC NEWS

The Subtle Safety line of jewelry is a reminder to make safe choices. The Subtle Safety ring is a expression of confidence. Orange whistles are garish and weapons can easily be turned against you. Subtle Safety jewelry is worn and available right where you need it.

very very cool ring… but must they market it for women… i would totally want a pair.. those are just too cool to be targeted specifically to women.

you’d have to question their effectiveness though… just because a person has brass knuckles, doesn’t mean they know how to punch… go against someone that grapples and uses joint locks, and they’re useless. but i guess that’s marketing… your average person will feel safer having a weapon on them, than none at all i suppose.

frankly, i think everyone should start walking about with wooden canes. what better weapon, and you wouldn’t get stopped by the police. :)

I agree, they shouldn’t market it just for women.

In fact, I could see myself getting one about the same time i got the new iPod photo (http://www.apple.com/ipodphoto/).

… maybe even one for each hand s

they are definitely not effective as brass knuckles, and are’nt being marketed as such, especially since brass knuckles are illegal, aren’t they?

it’s an image and confidence thing.

you’re right, i went back and read the print. they don’t market it as a weapon, but rather as a reminder and an “expression”.

“The Subtle Safetyâ„¢ line of jewelry is a reminder to make safe choices. The Subtle Safetyâ„¢ ring is a expression of confidence.”

    still cool nonetheless.

Interesting and nice rings. Will there be any questions during airport security checkpoints?

Somehow I don’t understand the messaging on the web site. Reminder to make safe choices and an expression of confidence? I don’t get it, what is the jewellry meant to do…the pieces other than the brass knuckles or whatever don’t seem different from other jewellry.
