Computers suck

My tape drive didn’t work out of the box. In fact, it never worked, so I have to drive it down to San Jose tomorrow for a replacement. Grrrr.
And, my 2nd machine was taken to be used as a server, so all of my peripherals are now attached to my main, dual-processor machine. And those of you out there who own dualies know that lots of peripherals (and, therefore, drivers) make them very unhappy. Stuff is starting to break.
I installed Yahoo! Messenger beta on my notebook computer. BAD idea. It failed silently. So, I installed the normal version, which started doing Very Bad Things when I tried to send messages (IE popups with error messages in them). After 30 minutes (installing and deleting stuff), I found the following lines in the install log:
Could not Self-Register: C:PROGRA~1Yahoo!MessengerYServer.exe
Self-Register: C:Program FilesYahoo!Messengerstock.dll
Self-Register: C:Program FilesYahoo!Messengerft.dll
Could not Self-Register: C:PROGRA~1Yahoo!MessengerYPager.exe
Could not Self-Register: C:PROGRA~1Yahoo!MessengerYmsgr_tray.exe
And so, I opened a command line window and typed in the following:
C:Program FilesYahoo!Messenger>ypager -regserver
C:Program FilesYahoo!Messenger>yserver -regserver
C:Program FilesYahoo!Messenger>ymsgr_tray -regserver
And… now it works. How are normal, non CS-dork people supposed to keep their machines running??
Hmmm. Zaru soba with Sophie –> a bit of cello –> a bit of piano. I’m ready for bed now, after a nice evening.
